School Programs

All of Red Oak Community School’s programs share a few key things in common.

They respect and educate the whole child.

The wide range of kids’ needs—physical, emotional, social, academic—is recognized here. Our students’ days are deliberately designed to balance academic and social-emotional learning, educator-led and student-structured time, indoor activity and outdoor exploration, and more. Our highly qualified, experienced teachers carefully observe how your whole child is developing through the Red Oak experience, and provide feedback on their progress not through grades or tests, but rather through conferences and ongoing teacher-parent communication.

They’re nature-focused.

The backbone and inspiration of our curriculum is the natural world. We believe that children are most primed to learn when they feel connected to nature, and we prioritize getting out into our environment to derive and apply ideas and concepts across academic subjects. Every day—except in the most extreme cases of weather—our students spend hours outdoors interacting, creating, imagining, problem-solving, and more.

They champion independence and collaboration.

At Red Oak, students are immersed in a community in which play, individual expression, experimentation, collaboration, and activism are celebrated. As they progress through our programs, students gain greater agency over their own learning, confidence in sharing their ideas and wrestling with others,and awareness of their critical roles as change-makers in our society and for our environment.

They’re part of a homeschool approach.

All students enrolled in our programs are considered homeschoolers, by us and by the State of Ohio. Whether you’re spending entire days around your kitchen table digging into math problems or coming home from a full week at Red Oak to garden in the backyard on a Friday evening, you’re teaching your kids—and they’re learning. While you focus on being present for these experiences, our educators support you by taking care of 100% of your state-required homeschool filings and annual assessments.

This program is for families who want to enrich their child’s homeschool experience with meaningful opportunities for social-emotional and nature-focused learning. Our two-day students engage in highly collaborative, inter-disciplinary learning units that you can extend and augment at home.

3-DAY Homeschool Enrichment Program

All grades (K-5) :: M/T/W, 9a - 3:30p

Do you value being able to educate your child at home a couple days a week, but want a partner who’s honored to share the responsibility? Our three-day program provides a strong academic foundation for your child, strengthened by rich social-emotional and nature-focused learning opportunities. Because this program fulfills two-thirds of the hours the state of Ohio requires your child to be engaged in education, you have the freedom and flexibility to supplement their learning at home in ways that fit your family.

5-DAY Full Educational Experience

All grades (K-5) :: M/T/W/Th/F, 9a - 3:30p

Has your family found that the traditional school experience simply doesn’t work for your child? Are you looking for a different way, one that prioritizes outdoor time and social-emotional learning just as highly as academics? Red Oak’s five-day full educational experience is designed to fulfill 100% of your child’s academic needs across subject areas while empowering them to think and express themselves freely, connect to the natural world, collaborate, and interact meaningfully with teachers and peers.
